“Flyin” Brian Malcolm Finalizing Plans To Return To Accord Speedway For New Season
The excitement continues to build in the Ulster County of New York as the roster of Modified hopefuls at the Accord Speedway changes everyday with drivers and teams making their final plans on where they will do their racing for the 2010 season that looms just ahead. The latest news will find the very capable and talented “Flyin” Brian Malcolm from Lake Ariel area in Pennsylvania landing at the speedway for an all-out assault at the speedway title for the new season. Malcolm was a late season addition to the solid Accord Modified roster last year after the Redline Raceway made the decision to throw in the towel right after the midway point of the 2009 racing season. Malcolm was leading the Redline Raceway’s Modified points when the track shut down making it the first Championship for the Modified speedster who will be entering his 12th season in competition in 2010. In his limited appearances at Accord, Malcolm had little trouble adjusting to the speedway and quickly became a crowd favorite with his all-out driving style. Malcolm scored a second place finish late in the season and ended up just out of the top twenty in the final point’s structure at the speedway. Malcolm credits current Accord Speedway Modified Champion Jerry Higbie for helping him dial his car in at the speedway when he returned to Accord for the racing action.
Malcolm has done most of his prior racing along the Southern Tier after gaining his initial foot-hold in the racing wars at the now defunct Lake Mocatek Speedway in 1998. He jumped into the full-size car divisions after securing three National titles in Quad racing as he traveled to as many as 25-states to follow the Quad racing tours. Deciding upon the Sportsman division, Malcolm learned his lessons well and by the end of his first season of competition, Malcolm found his way into victory lane at Mocatek. Malcolm moved into the Modified division in 2000 and has ranked among the top drivers in the Southern Tier ever since.
The off-season has been a very busy one for the Sharkey’s Fuel Race Team. Car Owner and former Sportsman competitor Rocky Rosetti has pulled out all of the stops for the new season for Malcolm. Last year’s 2007 Bicknell Chassis racer has been completely gone over and is ready to go for the start of the new season. In addition, the busy team is readying a never raced 2008 Bicknell Chassis racer as well to be ready for the full season ahead of them. Both cars will have horsepower supplied to them from motors out of the Precision Engine Shop in Middletown, New York. Sponsorship for the team comes from Rosetti’s Sharkey Fuel business as well as Smokin Joe’s Meat Market and Deli in Mount Cobb and from Jim and Deb Edwards. Plans call for the team to travel to Accord on Friday nights and back to Five Mile Point Speedway for the Saturday night racing action. Malcolm is single and has a daughter Magdalene from a previous marriage, and she is his biggest fan.
Malcolm and the Sharkey’s team are hoping for a quick start out of the box to be able to accomplish what the team knows they are capable of doing. They plan to be at the speedway for the series of practice sessions that have been set up by the speedway to usher in the start of the racing season that opens officially on April 16th with the running of the annual Scott Harvey Memorial race. The practice dates are April 2nd and April 9th and Promoter Gary Palmer Family is hoping for some favorable weather to work his magic on the high banked raceway. The 2010 season will have special significance at the speedway for Gary and Donna Palmer as the speedway has been under their direction for the tenth year and the family is enthusiastic about the plans for 2010 and beyond. The new Keystone/Empire 600 Wingless Micro Sprint Series is finalizing the dates for an eight race series with the Hamlin Speedway and the Midweek Madness Series will kick-off on June 9th. The speedway will once again have go-karts return to the weekly Wednesday racing activity under the rules of the WKA. To compliment the full show, the speedway will have 270 winged Micros and 600 wingless Micros going to war on the Accord high banks and the addition of those two exciting divisions will produce some excellent side by side racing on the ultra-wide channeled speedway. The 270’s and 600’s will be included in the King of the Catskills weekend. All interested competitors for the new divisions should contact the speedway office or Media Man Steve Pados regarding additional information about Accord or the Accord/Hamlin race series. Many more topics will be highlighted during the next few weeks as the dates for the 2010 racing season are confirmed. The April 16th opening is projected for the start of the 2010 racing season at Accord while the Midweek Madness racing is slated for Wednesday evening on the 9th of June.
